How to Dress an Infant for Winter

How to Dress an Infant for Winter

During Liam’s first winter, making sure he stayed warm + comfortable was my biggest challenge.

I didn’t find the perfect outfit “formula” until deep into Carson’s first winter. In this post I will share how I dress my infants for winter adventures. The brands I share are personal preference, the most important part is which fabrics to use + avoid. There are more affordable options on the market, however, the brands we use are extremely durable with amazing warranties.

Winter Gear Formula:

  1. I start with 1-3 non-cotton base + mid layers, depending on the conditions. We own a variety of layers in different fabrics and weights. Mostly merino wool, bamboo and synthetic blends like polyester. This step is truly personal preference, the important part is that they are not cotton!

2. I add 1-2 pairs of merino wool socks. I prefer wool socks because they have the added benefit of being odor resistant, but any non-cotton sock will do.

3. Next up is a fleece bunting for insulation. This can be fleece footie pjs or a fleece onesie!

4. Top with an insulated, windproof + water resistant bunting. Alternatively you can add another insulated layer with a shell on top. We use a combo of down + synthetic insulation.

5. Then I add a hat, hood, balaclava, or gaiter. Something(s) to keep their head warm & ears protected!

6. If their hands are exposed then gloves are necessary. However, most buntings have extra fabric to wrap over their hands. I apply the same rule for boots. Most buntings cover their feet but if yours doesn’t then they’ll need water resistant boots.

7. When it’s sunny + the infant will tolerate them, sunglasses are a bonus. It’s important to protect their eyes, but sometimes you have to pick your battles!

I wash our gear using fabric specific detergents from Nikwax. They also sell a proofing solution to keep your fabrics waterproof! Nothing ruins a winter adventure faster than being wet then freezing 🥶

Mila’s Infant Gear Line Up:

Base Layers: Patagonia Infant Capilene Midweight Set ⁣& Wee Woolies Merino Baby Base Layer Set

Fleece Bunting: Burton Infants’ Fleece Onesie⁣ or Patagonia Infant Micro D Bunting

Outer Layer: Patagonia Infant Hi-Loft Down Sweater Bunting ⁣or Infants’ Burton Buddy Bunting Suit

Socks: Smartwool Baby Bootie Batch Socks ⁣

Boots: (optional if they even fit) Baby Classic BOGS Boots

Balaclava/Gaiter/Hat/Hood: Carhartt Infant Foldover Knit Hat⁣, Patagonia Furry Friends Hat, or Burton Girls’ Chloe Beanie

The recommended “rule” is to put infants in one more layer than the big kids & adults.⁣ To quickly check a child’s temp outdoors place your hand on their stomach!
